WARNING SIGNS OF AN AGING TIMING BELT TO LOOK OUT FOR!
Your vehicle’s timing belt is super essential in keeping your vehicle running on the roads, but most of us don’t even know what it does or the signs of an aging belt. Don’t fret – we are here to help. The timing belt is an internal engine part designed to keep your crankshaft and camshaft rotating and ensures that the pistons and valves operate correctly. While it has some durability due to its rubber and nylon material, your timing belt will have to be replaced eventually.
WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE TIMING BELTS?
They usually require a replacement every 80,000 to 100,000 miles. However, that also depends on your vehicle’s manufacturer and wear-and-tear.
It is important to note that not all engines have timing belts. They are only usually found in cars and SUVs with smaller engines. More oversized vehicles with larger engines use a timing chain instead.

LOUD TICKING NOISE FROM ENGINE
Since the belt is attached to both the crankshaft and camshaft on a series of pulleys, when it starts to break down, it can cause combustion problems, thus causing a ticking noise inside the motor.
ENGINE WON’T TURN OVER
If the timing belt has broken on the inside, the engine will not be able to ignite. For example, when you turn the key, you might still hear the starter motor engage, but it will not turn over. If you notice this sign, please contact Eric’s Automotive as soon as possible.
ENGINE MISFIRES
As mentioned earlier, an aging timing belt will impact the engine’s ability to fire. Sometimes the belt might slip on the camshaft drive and cause one of your cylinders to open or close earlier than it is supposed to. In that situation, it also might cause misfiring and more engine damage.
OIL LEAKS FROM THE FRONTSIDE
It is pretty standard that an engine will leak motor oil from the timing belt cover if the belt is getting old. The cover is bound by a group of nuts and bolts that may come loose over time. Another issue that will cause oil leakage is when the gasket between the engine block and cover wears out or is cracked. As a result of the leaking oil, the engine might overheat and prematurely wear the timing belt.
